The Yoga Sutra and the Psychology of Yoga

The classic teachings underpinning yoga are found in the Yoga Sutra. Compiled some 2000 years ago, these teachings provide a roadmap to self-understanding and spiritual awakening. They are as relevant today as when they were written.

Much of our modern-day psychology is reflected in these teachings.

The module unlocks specific tools to access and bring to life these teachings.

Your Compassionate Self – Mindful Self-Compassion

with Dr Robin Beardsley

Tuesdays, 6:15-8:45 pm, April 21 – June 9

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported, 8-week, training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion through self-kindness, common humanity, and mindful awareness.

What to Expect

Program activities include:

  • meditation
  • short talks
  • experiential exercises
  • group discussion
  • home practices

The intention over the 8-week course is for participants to directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that evoke self-compassion in daily life.

MSC includes 8 weekly sessions of 2.5 hours each, in addition to a 4-hour retreat.

Prior to registering, participants should plan to attend every session and practice mindfulness and self-compassion at least 30 minutes per day throughout the program.

The modern approach to yoga is steeped in physical practice. It works with the movement of lifeforce – prana – to build a stronger and more resilient you. From the yoga point of view, we are more than our physical being. Within the physical form are layers of subtle anatomy that shape who and what we are. As we begin to understand the layers of our being we can better understand how to make affect changes.

We begin to understand the power of the subtle realms as the entry point for self-unfoldment. Once we move beyond the body fixation and learn to appreciate our whole being, our journies to self-understanding really begin.

Subtle Healing Practices of the Yoga Tradition

Continuing the work in the subtle realm, this module takes you through a number of practices and techniques that work on the physical, mental and spiritual levels of your being.

When practices are layered and the emphasis shifts to subtle work, the healing properties of the practices work best. Deep wounds and patterns can be broken or resolved to allow you to step into your inherent freedom and contentment.

Ayurveda – Yoga’s Sister Science

To understand yoga fully it is important that you have a foundation in Ayurveda. The sister science to yoga, Ayurveda is the medical aspect of yoga. It looks at diet, lifestyle and mental/psychological aspects of your life to help determine what imbalances are present, where and how those imbalances were generated and how to reduce and ultimately eliminate them.

The wisdom of breath is a deep part of the yoga tradition. For millennia yogis have used the breath to impact the mind and one’s overall well-being.
